Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

Only 10% (or about 50) of the S & P 500's holdings advanced on Tuesday's market-wide sell-off, which is an extremely low amount. Being up on a very big down session isn't the only thing that the stocks have in common. In fact, they are two of just 10 S & P 500 holdings currently trading over the $1L mark. Primed to outperform the market again All that said, AZO and ORLY have not outperformed the S & P 500 over the last two years. But their recent relative lines vs. the SPX now resemble the patterns from 2019-21, right before strong relative moves commenced.

Historically, November is the best month of the year for the stock market, and December is third, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. Under the surface this week, we also saw signs of a possible market rotation in the works. Rotation watch : We must look to next week's trading for confirmation that we're in the grips of a rotation or simply a head fake. Signs of the former were on display this week as the two of the biggest sector winners of the year, communication services and technology , trailed the market. Jobs, jobs, jobs : The most important release of the week comes Friday in the form of the November nonfarm payrolls report.

Lots of Wall Street firms are getting out ahead of this week's earnings from Constellation Brands (STZ) with price target increases. After the September meeting pause last week, the target range for the fed funds rate remained at 5.25% to 5.50%. First, I don't know a soul besides me who agrees with that 20-year versus fed funds rate yield prognosis. They think the fed funds rate will come down or the 20-year yield is already extended. The Labor Department reported that U.S. job openings unexpectedly rose in April, pointing to persistent strength in a labor market that suggests pressure on both wages and inflation. Futures traders raised to 70% the probability of a 25 basis points hike at the Fed's June 13-14 policy meeting. FEDWATCHFed Governor and vice chair nominee Philip Jefferson said skipping a rate hike in two weeks would provide policymakers time to see more data before making a decision. The Labor Department's closely watched May unemployment report, due on Friday, could decide whether a rate hike occurs. Shares of Advance Auto Parts plummeted roughly 30% during early trading Wednesday after the company's fiscal first-quarter earnings significantly missed Wall Street's expectations and executives slashed the retailer's yearly guidance and quarterly dividend. The Raleigh, North Carolina-based auto parts supplier blamed its dismal results and bleaker outlook on higher-than-expected costs for its professional sales, inflationary pressure, supply chain problems and an unfavorable product mix. Its quarterly revenue of $3.42 billion slightly missed expectations of $3.43 billion. Shares of other auto parts suppliers such as O'Reilly Automotive and AutoZone were also lower Wednesday. However, some Wall Street analysts believe Advanced Auto Parts' problems could be more operational than industrywide.

NEW YORK, May 31 (Reuters) - Advance Auto Parts' stock (AAP.N) was on track for its biggest daily percentage drop since the company went public in 2001 and was leading a selloff in other auto parts retailers Wednesday after the company cut its full-year forecast. Advance Auto's shares were last down 33.7% at $74.44, and hit their lowest level since March 2020. Shares of Genuine Parts Co (GPC.N) were down 5.3%, while Autozone (AZO.N) was down 4.6% and O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY.O) slipped 3.4%. Advance Auto cited elevated raw material, labor and freight costs as it reported results and gave its guidance. Its forecast cut follows a recent disappointing outlook from Foot Locker (FL.N) and underscores weakness in some areas of retail this earnings season.

With the end of another earnings season in sight, Wall Street's attention has turned to Washington and the debt ceiling deadline. Republican negotiators on Friday walked out of talks on raising the debt limit , abruptly ending a positive week of discussions that appeared to be leading toward a deal. Democrats and the White House have been pushing for a "clean" hike to the debt limit that would push the next deadline past the 2024 presidential election, while Republicans are pressing for spending cuts. Many investors believe this ongoing game of chicken over the debt limit is largely for show, since the U.S. has never defaulted on its debt obligations. U.S. President Joe Biden hosts debt limit talks with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and other congressional leaders in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 9, 2023.
That realization led portfolio manager David Miller to launch the Catalyst Insider Buying Fund (INSIX) nearly 12 years ago. While many funds factor in insider transactions when selecting stocks, few use it as their main prerequisite when screening investments. But in the last 12 months, it's the best-performing large-cap fund on the market through April 30, according to Kiplinger. All of these companies have benefitted from insider buying to some extent, but some have been lifted even more by company buybacks. "They've just been gobbling up their own stock," Miller said of O'Reilly Automotive.

Still, most minority groups hold a smaller share of board seats than their share of the total U.S. population. Often the investors have found receptive audiences, but slow turnover on corporate boards has limited the pace of change, recruiters say. The biggest gain over the four-year period was for Black or African-American directors, who nearly doubled their share of board seats to 8.3% from 4.4% in 2019. They were most represented in the utility sector, with 12% of board seats, and least represented among information technology, energy and healthcare companies, each at 6%. Compared to Hispanics' total share of the U.S. population, their 3.6% share of board seats "isn't anywhere near where it's supposed to be," she said.
